MARKET UMBRELLAS

Prior to the mainstream umbrellas that were constructed post-1787, most women across Europe carried market umbrellas as they went around doing their shopping. This was created so as to protect the women from the harsh ultraviolet rays of the sun.

Basically, through the ages women have always concentrated on protecting themselves from any type of skin damage. As fairness has universally been synonymous with the word beauty, women across the world have done everything they could to prevent sun tanning. However, this is not the case in the recent past as more and more ladies opt for a natural tanning, as the tanned look is considered to be beautiful.

But then for most, the market umbrellas are still an important accessory, without which they would not step out of the house. These are lightweight and small in size. They are available in varied prints. The most popular one carried almost all over are the Chinese market umbrellas. These umbrellas have canopies either made from paper or from a fine fabric with a Chinese print. The canopy is mounted on ribs and a rod made from bamboo.

The Indian umbrellas that women carry to protect themselves from the sun have canopies that carry Indian symbols or other aspects that represent Indian culture. Some of them are sold at handicraft emporiums and are purchased by tourists as souvenirs. These miniature umbrellas can also be constructed at home, though they may not last as long as those purchased from the shops.
